Exhibition "living will #1" planned by Kyoko Shioda
Setting support : Syuji Hirose, Masahiro Ichino

This work created and exhibited following the flow of three works on the theme of nuclear power generation and its accident, produced in 1995 and 2011. The 1995 work Innocent Babies was a work that participated in the “6th Fukui International Video Biennale” and produced with the theme of 15 nuclear power plants in Fukui at that time. The other two works, Second Burial (Gallery Mussokan, Kobe, May 2011) and Transitional State (CAS, Osaka, October 2011), were created in the wake of the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11, 2011, -and subsequence to the nuclear accident.

The 2017 work Sleepless Babies can be said to be a spatial and three-dimensional 'map' of Japan that symbolically indicates the situation in Japan at that time. The viewer will walk on or in the 'map'. In this work, we set up an 'enclosure' of two steel fences. One implies the radioactive contamination zone of 'Fukushima' and the other implies 'Okinawa' and the US military base. Furthermore, baby spoons stored in dozens of small boxes on the wall imply the operating status of nuclear power plants in Japan, and sometimes start shaking all at once and start hitting the boxes with sounds con, con. Viewers walk around the two 'enclosures,' but they are in only another 'enclosure' surrounded by a wall with spoons. In this work, the various objects and devices are once 'symbolized' and arranged. But it is aimed these objects pass through the 'net of symbols' due to their weight and sound. As well as, it returns to the real space by the perceptual experience of the viewers.

---Right next to us are polluted forests, fields, and towns, while on the other hand, there are several nuclear reactors ready to wake up from their beds. Right next to us are places that we are not allowed to enter, and are propellers spinning at high speed with a loud noise. Surrounded by 'sleepless things,' we become 'sleepless children.' The work "Sleepless Babies" is a lullaby to those 'sleepless things' and 'sleepless children'. (from the exhibition leaflet)
