Stolen Bodies I

新作《Stolen Bodies》（※）は、もう一カ所の会場（TRANS-MEDIUM）での作品《FLASH BACK III》と共に、二つのギャラリーを使ったプロジェクト「FLASH BACK 1991」の一つの構成要素として展示された。後者の作品は、1990年制作の「FLASH BACK」シリーズの再構成である。また、この企画には更にカード式カタログ「Catalogue FLASH BACK」と3.5inchフロッピーディスクに収められたソフトウェア「HyperCard FLASH BACK」が付随する。これまでの「FLASH BACK」シリーズが心的な回想や記憶・情報を背景とするのに対し、《Stolen Bodies（盗まれた身体）》では、身体の記憶や情報に焦点を当てている。
作品は、「臓器移植」という問題圏から発想を得て、身体の部品化と交換可能性を「私（セルフ）」の拡散というテーマと絡み合わせ構想された。 当時、私達にインパクトを与えたのは、「臓器移植」の先進国アメリカにおいて、臓器提供者（ドナー）と受取人（レシピエント）間での臓器の適合性を図るため、臓器バンクを介し、双方の情報がネットワーク上で飛び交っていることであった。人が脳死になる前の段階から回りの事態は動き始め、その人がドナーになった時点で、すべては配分されつくしている。コンピュータテクノロジーの発達による身体情報のネットワーク化やデータベース化が背景となっている。

The new work “Stolen Bodies”(*) exhibited as one component of the project "FLASH BACK 1991," which uses two galleries together with the work “FLASH BACK III” at another venue (TRANS-MEDIUM). The latter work is a reconstruction of the "FLASH BACK" series produced in 1990. Besides, this project will also be accompanied by a card-type catalog "Catalogue FLASH BACK" and software "HyperCard FLASH BACK" contained in a 3.5-inch floppy disk. Whereas the previous "FLASH BACK" series based on emotional recollections, memories, and information, "Stolen Bodies" focuses on the memories and information of the body.
This work inspired by the problem area of "organ transplantation," and designed with the theme of diffusion of "the self." Furthermore, the possibility of exchanging the parts of the body. At that time, it had an impact on us that in the United States, an advanced country of “organ transplantation,” to ensure the compatibility of organs between organ donors and recipients, the information of both parties was flying around on the network through organ banks. From the stage before a person's brain death, things around him start to move, and when he becomes a donor, everything allotted. The background is the networking and database of physical information due to the development of computer technology.
